Faithpoint Partners in Mission
Since Faithpoint received its charter, it has dedicated 10% of its operating budget and countless volunteer and in-kind donations to support missions locally and around the world. Emphasis has been on local missions in Frederick County. Periodically, mission trips have been made elsewhere in the US and abroad.
Selection of supported missions depends on the involvement of someone in the congregation who is willing to serve as an advocate for the mission. Mission advocates participate regularly in some way in the activity and work of the mission. Participation can take as much time as one wishes to spend on it – ranging from corresponding with an international mission electronically to rebuilding a housing facility on weekends. Of course, there are also a variety of single events throughout the year where one can just participate occasionally. There are even projects specifically intended for children to participate.

Consistent with Faithpoint’s purpose to point unconnected people to a wholly-committed relationship with God, our goal is to care for the needs of our missionaries and to increase the awareness and passion of our people for spreading the life-changing message of Jesus, in Urbana and throughout the world. Our desire is for each of our supported missionaries and mission ministry groups to have a “Mission Advocate.” This person serves as the liaison between Faithpoint and the missionary.
What are the Duties of a Mission Advocate?
- Get to know the missionary through corresponding regularly through any means of communication that is mutually convenient. (Often email or Skype)
- Communicate to the Faithpoint community the missionary’s stories and praise items of how God is working through their ministry.
- Inform the Faithpoint community of the missionary’s needs–prayer requests, financial needs, other concerns. This information is typically distributed via a bulletin item or on the church Website and is often a simple matter of forwarding a monthly or bi-monthly email published by the missionary to the church office.
- Participate as you feel lead in the activities of the mission.
- For missions located outside of the local area, assist the missionaries as needed if they visit our area. (example: help arrange housing and/or transportation; coordinate speaking opportunities to the congregation, Missions Ministry Team, small groups) – (Once every 3-5 years)
- Communicate budget needs to the Missions Chair. (One email per year)
- Handle check requests. (Varies by mission but no more than 3 times per year)
How do I Choose a Missionary?
Is there a particular country, people, or ministry type that God has laid on your heart? Alternatively, you may suggest a ministry that is close to your own heart that can be considered for funding and prayer support by Faithpoint. In either case, you may want to choose to become a Mission Advocate now, or you may want to correspond with several missionaries for a few months before you choose. Mission Advocates typically commit to serve for at least one year, renewable for as long as you wish. The Chair of the Missions Team is available to assist you in your decision to serve.
