GPS: For the week of May 25, 2014

Throughout our foundations series the focus of the GPS will be to dig deeper into scripture about the part of the creed we discussed the previous week in worship.

Further there is an open invitation to join us for conversation at Foster’s Grille Thursdays beginning at 6:30 for deeper conversation.  Come for as long as you can for good food and great conversation.

Finally you can visit https://faithpointum.org/foundations-series/ for other weekly resources and a printable version of the creed worksheet so that you can create your own creed by the ned of the series.

Monday-Wednesday: (Your pastor today goofed and forgot the GPS for this week. Will you forgive me?)

Thursday Hebrews 10:1-4

On May 24, 1738, John Wesley penned these words in his journal: In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while the leader was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.

  • The forgiveness of sins cannot be only an acknowledgement with our minds, but also with our hearts as well.  Ti must be an experienced reality.  You you have this kind of assurance? Do you believe that your past sins are unforgivable? Are you struggling to forgive yourself for something in your past?
  • Embracing forgiveness means that we push through roadblocks with the grace of God.  Take some time today to to write your story of forgiveness and your encounters with God’s grace.

Friday Read: Matthew 6:9-15

We all like to think about the way that God’s forgiveness changes us and liberates us from a life of condemnation.  However it is much more uncomfortable to think about the words form the passage of scripture today.  We must also forgive those who have sinned against us.

  • Why is it more difficult to receive forgiveness than to give it?
  • Is there someone in your life that you have yet to forgive?   This is not an easy thing, to truly forgive, but it is a liberating thing.  Just like the liberation of God forgiving us, letting go of the weight of holding a grudge can eat away at us.  This doesn’t mean that you are a doormat ready to we walked all over, but someone who will not continue to be hurt from the past.

Saturday Read: Luke 15

This chapter was the focus of last sunday’s message and speaks volumes about the lengths God will go to pour out grace and forgiveness upon us.

  • In the three stories what is risked by searching out the lost item (coin, sheep, son)?
  • What is striking about the story of the loving father to you? Which son do you most identify with?
