Reflecting on Psalm 22
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Of course I know this verse. It is one of Christ’s last words on the cross. To find it in a psalm from so long ago was a much needed reminder that the world has always gone through dark times and felt abandoned by God.
There is so much pain, strife, and chaos in the world today. It feels as if we live in extraordinarily dark times. How can we not be “poured out like water” with the fear of terrorism? How can we not feel our bones, our lives, our very beings “out of joint” when we witness the violence stemming from hatred and prejudice? How can our hearts not melt like wax for the refugees, the lost, and the homeless?
We too cry out to God.
And yet, we are reminded that even in our darkest hours, it is God who has dominion over all the world. We are not abandoned. God is with us from birth, to death, and beyond. God hears our cries and saves us.
