Advent Reflection for December 14, 2012

FRIDAY  Matthew 2:13-16, 19-21

• In Jesus’ day, the population of Alexandria, Egypt was probably about one-third Jewish. There were also other Jewish communities in Egypt. This made Egypt a safer refuge for Joseph, Mary and Jesus than it would be in today’s conditions. What people or places have given you safety or comfort in times of trouble in your life?

• God used dreams to guide Joseph (as he did the Old Testament Joseph before him). Many Christians believe it makes sense that God can communicate directly with our brains, without the need for sounds or visual cues. When have you sensed an “inner nudge” from God? Are you open to receive God’s direction, however it arrives?

Reflection by Charlie McNally

In my life, I have been blessed to have a large, loving family. My mother is still going strong at 76 years of age and I have 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Although we are not physically close (we all live in different states) I know that when I have troubles or personal problems, each and every one of them is there for me, just a phone call away. I also take great strength from my children who are so very important to me. I know their love is unconditional and when I look at them I know God has truly blessed me by allowing me to have them and share in the formation of their lives.
I believe that God is always present with me. I wish He would just speak to me and explain why things are happening and what the plan is; wouldn’t that be fantastic?
Unfortunately, this is not the case, but I know for a fact that He is with me and listening to me when I pray. I know I constantly struggle with my brokenness and weakness and usually I listen to my inner voice (conscience? God talking to me?) which usually results in good choices that work out for me. If God was not present I know I would not have the strength to live my faith to the extent that I do. I am most definitely a work in process but without the presence of God in my life I would be lost.

Like Charlie, I am so blessed by my children and how they have helped me grow in my faith. Since the birth of my first child, I have “heard” gods voice in several ways at different times. BUT, I know that he is always with me. What an amazing life it is when you know that God is walking with you.

I hear you, Charlie! My family is far, far away, too, but I know I can count on them. And I can count on my God and my church family that is always near!!! Thank you, Jesus!
