Reflection:
• Simeon’s words of praise echoed the language of the prophet Isaiah. Both Isaiah 42:6 and 49:6 spoke of “the servant of the Lord” being a light to the Gentiles. How might Simeon’s immersion in the Scriptures have prepared him to see in Jesus more than a common baby? How does the Bible help you see below the surface of life?
Response: Simeon must have been eager to meet the baby Jesus and based on this passage, he seems to have been prepared for this event. I assume that prophesies previously told and written in scripture left a strong influence on what Simeon said at this meeting with Mary.
I am not an active reader of scripture but when I hear certain passages read out loud during Sunday sermons, it gives me peace and relief of the pressures I face personally at home and at work. It reminds me of the ultimate gift and sacrifice given to us and it is easy to lose sight of that with all of the busy schedules and stress of life.
• Simeon said of Jesus, “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against.” To Mary he added the haunting words, “And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” How did he know that? What do you think Luke meant when he said of Simeon that “the Holy Spirit was on him”?
Response: I assume this means that Mary will suffer or be greatly saddened by the crucifixion. By not knowing how Simeon could make a statement like this to Mary without the event actually occurring, it makes sense that the Holy Spirit would be speaking to him to guide his words and actions.
