SATURDAY Luke 2:41-52
• Jesus taught, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy… everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 5:7, 7:24) How might we see the effect of merciful Joseph, a wise and careful carpenter, in Jesus’ teaching and life? Who has shaped your life for the better, through example and actions? Are there people who, given that chance, let you down and hurt you? Whose lives are you seeking to shape for the better?
Today’s Reflection by Chris
I hadn’t really thought about the impact that Joseph’s teaching and parenting would have had on Jesus. I think that this is mostly because Joseph doesn’t do much in the biblical text, except for taking orders to go here and there like we saw in yesterday’s reading. As we have studied Joseph this week we can almost imagine some of the things Jesus said being lessons that he heard from his father.
This reading has gotten me thinking about those other silent witnesses in my life that have shaped the way that I have come to know the world. My parents, like most others, have been the primary faith sharers for me. There are also, friends, roommates, my wife, my kids, those who I don’t know their name but have served or been served by me. Who are these people for you? Who do you need to share your story with?
This will be the backdrop for worship tomorrow as we look at the relationship between Mary and Elizabeth.
Come and continue the conversation.
