GPS: For the week of February 24, 2013

Weekly Reflections:

Jesus was a powerful teacher, but he also performed many wonderful signs of his power and authority.  This week we are going to be looking at some of the Miracles of Jesus.

Challenge for the week:  This week in worship we handed out Easter invite cards to keep in your wallet or purse.  As we talked about the importance of the company we keep this week, there is also something to be said for the company we invite.  You are challenged with inviting a friend or two to our Easter service or the Eggstravaganza,  The only rule is that you have to make sure to be there too so they are not alone.

Monday: Jesus Walks on Water: Matthew 14:22-33

  • What is something that causes you anxiety?
  • What was it that made Peter sink? Wind and the waves? Soggy Sandals? Loss of confidence? Lack of faith?
  • Remember that you can’t walk on water while you are still in the boat.  Where do you need to take a step of faith this week.

Tuesday: Jesus Calms the Storm: Mark 4:35-41

  • Think about the worst storm you have ever been in.  On a scale of 1-10 how stressful was that for you?
  • How does it make you feel to know that, “even the wind and the waves obey him [Jesus]?
  • What worries do you have that you need Jesus to calm?

Wednesday: Jesus Feeds the 5000: Mark 6:30-44

  • Jesus and the disciples had been working long and hard and it was time to unwind.  What do you like to do after a hard day of work?
  • The disciples thought that they were going to get a break because they were “off the clock,” but there was a need and Jesus had other plans.  What do we learn about our stewardship of free time through this passage?

Thursday: Ten healed of Leprosy: Luke 17:11-19

  • In today’s scripture 10 people essentially got their lives back.  While a leper you are separated from loved ones, you can’t work and you are an outcast.  Being made clean ment that they would have all of that back.  Ten were healed by Jesus and only one returned to say thanks. How good are you at giving thanks? Do you write thank you cards, emails or texts?
  • What gets in your way of saying thanks?
  • Pause your day for 5 minutes right now and say thanks to someone you are grateful for.

Friday: Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind: John 9:1-15, 24-35

  • Today is all about seeing clearly, but not just with our eyes.  If you were to go to the “spiritual optometrist” how would your spiritual vision rate? 20-20? Nearsighted? Farsighted? Some blind spots? Legally Blind?
  • The question is asked in this passage about whose fault the blindness is, but Jesus makes clear no one is at fault.  What are some of your disabilities or weaknesses?  How Might your weakness be a chance for God to be glorified?

Saturday: Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead:  John 11:17-44

  • Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days before word reached Jesus that he had died.  Yet Jesus facing the stench of death proved to have power over death.  We have all encountered loss.  If you could have asked Jesus to raise someone who would it be? Why?
  • In this story Lazarus is raised from the dead. This is a very different thing that resurrection.  Lazarus would die again, but with resurrection we encounter eternal life.  Through Christ death loses its sting.  Does this bring you comfort?
