Reflecting on Psalm 121: 1-8
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip. He who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm, He will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
I feel encouraged when I read Psalm 121. Given the threats in the world today – even in our cities and neighborhoods – and the fears that can overwhelm us, Psalm 121 makes me take a deep breath and remember to trust in the Lord and His plan for me and our world. I recognize that evil may still overwhelm me, but this is not God’s intent for me and my life.
When things get scary and fear grips me, when I feel helpless, God’s promises are reassuring and comforting. I have often imagined that if I find my life threatened, that I will recite a promise over and over, even to death. God’s promises give me peace.
