Reflecting on 1 Corinthians 3:11-23
1 Corinthians 3:19 “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.”
We live in the Information Age. Google tells us anything we need to know. Yet, even it uses the Bible to respond to: “Google, describe God.” “There is nothing that anyone can know about God’s nature unless He reveals it to humankind.”
Is this what Paul says in his letter? The Corinthian Greeks thought they were the wisest of men. They did not recognize that this passion for worldly wisdom blinded them to spiritual truth. Paul tells the Corinthian believers not to deceive themselves. To be truly wise, they should become “fools”.
We think of ourselves as being far wiser than the ancient Greeks. Yet, Paul proposes that we become fools to better understand God. We must look beyond earthly wisdom and knowledge; for what are these but man searching out the structure of God’s creation? Is it not far better for us to seek out and worship the God who created it all?
Today, look beyond knowledge of this world to find true spiritual wisdom.
Lord God, teach us that the truth that leads us to You comes through knowing Your Son, Jesus. Amen
