GPS: For the week of March 24, 2013

This week is a week in the church year called “Holy Week.”  This is the week that we get ready for Easter.  However if we just focus on Palm Sunday and then skip to Easter Sunday we miss on the passion and pain of Christ.  We miss out on much of the power of the love story of God’s Word made Flesh in Jesus.  This week we devote our time to look at the last week of Jesus.

Monday:  The Triumphal Entry                                  Luke 19:28-44 & Old Testament Promise that Jesus would be brutally killed Isaiah 53:9

There are times where we can’t help but celebrate and get excited. This may beat a parade, worship service, sporting event, watching your favorite reality show…. In verse 39-40 Jesus is told to control his disciples.  He responds by saying that if they are quiet then the rocks will cry out.  What do you think this means?

In what ways are you crying out to Jesus in celebration through your actions?

Tuesday:  Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet          John 13:1-17 & Old Testament Promise that He would be assigned a grave with the wicked Isaiah 53:8

What would your reaction be if someone you really respected began to wash your feet after a really long day of work?

As we read this scripture as the church universal we may reflect on the election of the new pope and the name he took.  Francis’ name tells much about the priority of the poor and the “least of these.”  How does this scripture encourage us to serve?  how might you serve this week?

Wednesday:  Jesus in the Garden            Mark 14:32-42 & Old Testament Promise that he would return for the dead Isaiah 53:8, 11

Have you ever fallen asleep in an embarrassing place (at work, in class, at a stoplight, on a date…)?

Reread verse 34 when Jesus rebuked Peter for sleeping.  How do Jesus’ words of, “the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” pertain to you? In what ways are you working to keep fit for what God has in store for you in body and spirit?

Thursday:  Peter Disowns Jesus                Luke 22:54-62 & Old Testament Promise that  Jesus would be familiar with suffering Isaiah 53:3

Today is the day in the church year where we remember the handing over of Jesus to those who would crucify him while the disciples begin to scatter.  When have you totally blown it, like Peter in this scripture? How well do you respond or bounce back from failure?

How are you proclaiming Christ in your life rather than disowning him?  If you would like to share your story please email Pastor Chris Chris@faithpointum.org

Friday: Jesus Before Pilate                          Mark 15:1-15 & Old Testament Promise that He would be buried in a rich man’s tomb Isaiah 53:9

When someone accuses you of something, what is your typical response?

How does the story of Barabbas illustrate what Christ has done for you?  How are you able to remember this daily?

Saturday:  Crucifixion and Death                              Luke 23:26-49

Losing someone who is close to us is really difficult.  Who you have lost in your life that has made a lasting impact?

When have you been punished for something that you didn’t do?  How did it feel?  Have you ever taken the blame for someone else?  Why?

When Jesus says “Father  forgive them” in verse 34, who was he asking God to forgive?
