Lent Devotion for March 29

Reflecting on John 6: 27 – 40

Jesus is the Bread of Life
Bread comes in many forms. There is the regular loaf of bread, banana bread, french bread, Italian bread, pumpernickel, yada…yada…yada. Breads are often included along with many meals. Then there are doughnuts! Nothing goes with them better than coffee! That is the drawing card we needed when I helped with my Bible study group in Nha Trang, Vietnam in 1969. Coffee and doughnuts was the perfect draw for people to attend our Easter Sunrise Service we planned for Easter morning. We got approval to use our patrolled beach along the beautiful South China Sea. The view there is tremendous of each day’s sunrise.
We put ads at every option we had on both the Army and Air Force bases. Our Bible group of about 25 thought that we might be lucky to have maybe 150 people attend. We set up a sound system for the Army chaplain to use. We set up tables to serve the coffee and doughnuts to hopefully at least 150 people.

Then the jeeps and military transports of all sizes showed up! Somewhere over 800 troops appeared. The coffee and doughnuts did not last long. But that did not matter.
The bread that they were really after was the bread of life through that beachfront celebration of the rising of our Lord Jesus Christ.
