Encounter: an invitation to wake up
Have you ever experienced a spiritual haze? Life intensifies but you lose faith – and find yourself rationalizing bad behavior and settling into lazy habits. Something’s not working, and you sink into a spiritual force stronger than you alone can handle. This week as we turn the corner towards the cross Jesus invites us to encounter HIMSELF – and freedom from all that seeks to steal, kill and destroy.
Monday: Read Luke 22:1-23
What prompted Judas to betray Jesus? Was it simply the devil’s work, or was Judas a participant as well? Explain. What are the things in your life that tempt you to betray Jesus? How do you relate to Judas?
Tuesday: Read Luke 22:24-38
How do you think Jesus felt when he heard the disciples arguing about which one of them was the greatest? What did this reveal about their understanding of what it meant for Jesus to be the Messiah? In what ways do you relate to the disciples?
Wednesday: Read Luke 22:39-53
Is the scene of Jesus’ anguish in the garden comforting, troubling or a mixture of both for you? Explain. Why did the disciples fall asleep? In what ways can you relate to the disciples in this situation?
Thursday: Read Luke 22:54-71
What led Peter to deny Jesus? How do you relate with Peter? Have there been times in your life when you have denied Jesus? Explain.
Friday: Read Luke 23:1-25
Many of these same people who are calling for Jesus’ crucifixion were also the ones welcoming him into the city in Luke 19. What caused them to change their opinion of Jesus in such a short time? How do you see this in your own life?
Saturday: Read Luke 23:26-43
Jesus’ prayer to God “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” is jaw dropping to say the least. How does this speak to you? How does it challenge you? How does it encourage you?
Sunday: Read Luke 23:44-56
What is the significance of the temple curtain being torn? What is the significance of the centurion praising God? As this Lenten season comes to an end, reflect on some of the things you have learned, new habits you have developed and changes you want to make as a result.
